ABOUT ABOUT

You are invited to a free walking tour of lesbian and queer spaces in Greenwich Village on Sunday, October 20th, at 11:00am presented by Open Finance Women +

The tour, led by LGBT+ archivist Jenny Mohan, will last about 1.5 hours and will conclude at The Half Pint, where participants will have the opportunity to review archival materials from many of the spots covered on the tour. RSVPs are mandatory and space will be limited to 20 people.

Explore the hidden stories and powerful legacies of lesbian and queer history in Greenwich Village, a neighborhood long recognized as a haven for LGBTQ+ people. This walking tour invites participants to delve into the lives of the queer women who helped shape the cultural and political landscape of the Village, making it a cornerstone of lesbian activism and identity.

The walking tour will cover six decades of lesbian and queer history of Greenwich Village, and addresses issues like Prohibition, the rise of butch-femme culture, nightclubs and commercialized drag, police monitoring and harassment, political and social clubs, and arts organizations. You’ll learn about the creation of safe spaces that fostered a sense of belonging, where queer women could explore their identities and build solidarity, eventually helping to make Greenwich Village the center of the queer world in the United States.

We will make multiple stops to share stories of influential lesbians and gender non-conforming people who contributed to the arts, literature, and activism, often intersecting with other marginalized communities. These narratives highlight the Village’s role as a melting pot of creativity and resistance, where lesbian voices were crucial in shaping the cultural fabric of New York City.
